  • Resources to help with Guardianship

At age 18, parents no longer have guardianship of their son/daughter. Completing the process to obtain guardianship can protect those who need help with important life decisions regarding healthcare, education, finances, etc.

Guardianship is granted by the court. When obtaining guardianship, an attorney can be used or it can be done "pro se" (without a lawyer). Families may also decide to consult with organizations that provide guardianship services. Current documentation (within 30 days of filing) must be used to document the need for guardianship.

It is important to discuss guardianship prior to age 18 and research what it entails and how it is obtained. The information provided covers the process, role of a guardian, alternative options, and support services available.
